Deborah J. Short, Ph.D., founded and directs Academic Language Research & Training, and provides professional development on academic literacy, content-based ESL, and sheltered instruction worldwide. She has directed research and evaluation projects related to English learner education and co-developed the SIOP Model for sheltered instruction. Publications include The 6 Principles books (TESOL), SIOP Model books (Pearson), ESL textbooks (National Geographic Learning/Cengage), and professional journal articles. She has taught ESL and EFL, in New York, California, Virginia, and the DR Congo. She is TESOL’s President-Elect for 2019-2020.

Redesigning ELT with The 6 Principles®
This keynote presents an overview of TESOL’s The 6 Principles for Exemplary Teaching of English Learners® and their application to EFL and CLIL settings. It describes the vision for ELT education in the 21st century, explains optimal conditions for second language learning, showcases effective instructional and assessment practices, and discusses how to use the 6 Principles for teacher development and program improvement. By implementing the 6 Principles in strategic ways, English language educators can promote multilingual learner success.

Integrating Subject Area Topics with Academic Language Learning
Successful 21st century learners can discuss subject topics in their additional languages when their English teachers use methods that make topics comprehensible while developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. This interactive workshop explores how teachers extract academic language from subject topics and demonstrates techniques that develop academic language skills.
