Nearly half of all children have experienced some sort of trauma; for teenagers and adults, that number is even higher (Mels et al, 2010). Trauma impacts brain development, learning, and behavior. Children who have undergone trauma are more likely to struggle with language, communication, problem solving, cause and effect relationships, attention and concentration, emotion regulation, and relationship development and maintenance with both peers and adults (Citizen, 2006). As such, it is imperative that teachers, have skills in trauma-informed pedagogy in order to meet the needs of young learners for tomorrow’s world. Moreover, in supporting their students who have survived trauma, teachers are at risk for experiencing secondary trauma themselves. In this presentation we share classroom strategies for supporting both students who have encountered trauma as well as tips for teachers to manage secondary trauma they may also experience
