TESOL Italy’s 43rd National Convention – Call for Papers @ Polo Didattico
Nov 16@09:00–Nov 17@17:00

“TESOL Italy’s 43rd National Convention “Paths of Change”

will take place on November 16th and 17th, 2018 in Rome at Polo Didattico, Piazza Oderico da Pordenone, 3.

It seems that all previous conditions in English Language Teaching must be re-focused and observed under the lens of “liquidity”, mutability, permeability, cross-fertilization, hybridization, flexibility, and more. How do English language teachers envisage their role, profession and responsibilities in a period characterized by fast-pacing changes? Do they just need to adjust and adapt, or acquire other competencies?
Let’s look at some examples and a few more questions. The demographics of Italian schools continue to shift, so how can teachers and schools best serve their changing population? Digital technologies have, so far, helped teachers work with learners and learners work independently. However, how should teachers approach and use all the new technologies and e-learning possibilities in order to carry out real innovation and change? What does the widespread use of English for intercultural communication imply for teachers?
The varieties of English language (Global Englishes) produce transcultural flows and, as a consequence, new forms of global identification. How should teachers re-think their way of teaching, and how should they engage with the current world? The new CEFR descriptors emphasize mediation, the use of communication strategies and a new way of looking at native and non-native speakers’ interactions. How can teachers most effectively implement all this in their classrooms?

Creativity can change the world @ Liceo Scientifico Teresa Gullace Talotta
Dic 13@14:30–18:30

TESOL Italy Rome Local Group

kindly invites you to their seminar

Creativity can change the world

Speakers: Maria Grazia Maglione M. Antonietta Ortenzi Elisabetta Vaccaro

The seminar is focused on how creativity is what has propelled us forward as a species – it expands our world and brings us new ideas, inventions and discoveries. Creativity is the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality.

Furthermore, in the revised Bloom’s taxonomy “creating” is on top of the pyramid and in the framework for 21st century learning is among the skills students need to succeed in work, life and citizenship.

In the seminar we will reflect on how to encourage students to develop their creativity and engage them in meaningful activities.

The creative writing competition, which is  aimed at  students of primary, middle and secondary schools including students with special educational needs and learning difficulties, encourages creativity and self-expression,  helps develop autonomy as well as cross-curricular skills and presentation skills. Also it gives the opportunity to develop CLIL connections.

Authentic Texts, Reading Aloud and Tasks. @ SIS - School of International Studies
Feb 8@17:00–19:00

Authentic Texts, Reading Aloud and Tasks: using authentic English and creating fun tasks, which motivate middle and high school students to become autonomous readers of real English.

Presenter: John Shave, Alphabeta Picadilly, Bolzano

Moderators: Andrew Wimhurst and Graham Burton

Extensive reading is amazingly beneficial to young learners’ progress. If only we could get our students to become autonomous readers of authentic English. But how can we begin to make this happen? If you have already tried begging, bribing and threatening your students, and that still hasn’t worked, then come to this workshop to try out some fun activities which promote authentic reading through an integrated-skills, Task Based Learning approach. Participants will think about how to introduce middle and upper school learners to age-appropriate, authentic texts and how to create fun, emotionally and intellectually stimulating, interactive tasks, which allow even low-level learners to use English and motivate them to take their first steps on their personal reading journey.

OPEN REGISTRATION UNTIL ALL SPOTS ARE FULL! LIMITED SPACES AVAILABLE. PLEASE REGISTER USING THE FOLLOWING LINK NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY 6th FEBRUARY: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090449AFAE22A0F94-aworkshop
